King's Birthday Weekend

Ok, so my computer broke, and finally it is up and running again! So, it's time to tell you all about December! Best place to start is King's Birthday Weekend, which really lasted for about 2 weeks.

Big celebrations here for this.

Around Rachadamneon, all the flowers were re-done so they were all yellow, and the whole place decorated in yellow for the King like so

And this is WangLang Pier all lit up at night for the celebrations

However, this year thanks to increased Red shirt Yellow shirt tension, and due to the fact that the King has just come out of hospital, they recommened everyone to wear pink shirts. I wore my pink shirt with everyone else.

So, what did I do for the King's Birthday on 5th December? I went to Ayutthaya with some friends from the dorm! So, leaving at 7:30am we took the 20 baht train ticket which means you get to stand the whole way. Here is Hualamphong Station in the morning

And this shot which I think is particularly deep and artistice.....hahaha, maybe not

So the train is very, very crowded for only 20 baht tickets, which is not a problem except for the fact that people come up and down and up and down and up and down again and again to sell things, and they just CANNOT fit past!

Anyways, we made it then hired a tuk tuk to take us around a million temples. It was all really good. Most of these temples I had either been there already, or had listened to a zillion presentations about them in Art and Architecture class that I feel like I have been there. So, here are some pictures of the various wats we visited throughout the day

This is putting the robes out from the Buddha and people cover themselves with them as this is considered good luck

We went to this temple last year but the buddha was having its gold re-done, and this is it finished! Suay mak mak chay may!!

Ok wait, interrupt temples for lunch break...hooray!! Had kway thiaow rua (boat noodles) which come in ultra small portions so you have a million bowles in order to get full. Check out the size of the noodles and vegetable baskets used to put these zillion bowls of noodles that are made here together!

And the finished product...aroy.....

And then we're back to wats with Wat Mahatat and the buddha covered in trees.....

And E-chan immitating the various mudras of the buddha

Then let's move onto something more exciting than temples....the Aytthaya floating market!! This place is made of bamboo and floats....disconcerting yes...exciting yes......delicious food yes yes...oh and buffalo appearing from the water to freighten Japanese tourists....check!

How do you get delicious abovementioned food.....with coupons!

Coupons can buy anything here.....including deep-fried flowers

And for those who prefer to keep the flowers in a vase to be admired in the loungeroom of their home, may I suggest the rice paper rolls....delicious with dipping sauce and served on a bannana leaf

This lady floats around in the boat and sells fruit to those who wants some. I wanted some and bought some pineapple from her. She chooped it up and prepared it in the boat then handed it over to us when she was done!

Back home and I headed into Rachadamneon for the night time birthday festivities. But there were so so sooooo many people. Think golden week in Tokyo and times by 10 and thats how many people were there! See all the pink shirts for the occassion!

Democracy Monument where an orchestra were playing.

Lit up royal boat which went down the road. Then fire works went off from the middle of the road and sounded more like guns and cannons the were so loud and at such close range also! Anyways, after about 1 hour of fighting the crowd I decided to call it a night and head home.
